Jesus was born in and grew up in a multicultural world (Israel was then is is now the part of the world where Europe, Asia, and Africa meet. Throughout his life, Jesus taught that God's love stretches far beyond the borders of nations and cultures. In fact, Jesus often used examples which pointed to people outside of his culture to support his teaching of love.
Acts 2 describes the birthday of the church when people heard the disciples speaking in the languages of fiteen different countries. The church is and needs to be multicultural because God is multicultural. We can feel the presence of God in our life through many ways of worship, in many languages, with different types of musical instruments and with human voices. God created diversity, and as such diversity is a blessing in our lives.
We suspend expectations of what faith, God, and church behavior should be, because we recognize everyone as children of God. We envision a church where everyone embraces differences and contributes to others' faith journeys.
We embrace differences in race, age, lifestyle, income and political belief. We draw strength in learning from others and celebrate the challenge of knowing Jesus as seen in other's eyes. We all share a belief in God's grace.
